Nature's Variety has voluntarily recalled its Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet for dogs and cats with a "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The affected products of Nature Variety's Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diet are limited to the chicken medallions, patties, and chubs. The following sizes have been affected by the voluntary recall: 3 lb. chicken medallions, 6 lb. chicken medallions, 2 lb. chicken cubes, all with the "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10. The "Best If Used By" date is located on the back of the package above the safe handling instruction.
The nationwide voluntary recall, issued Thursday by Nature's Variety, were as a result of a consumer complaint, with subsequent testing finding that the "Best If Used By" date of 11/10/10 to be contaminated with Salmonella. However, no pet or human illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this lot code.
Salmonella can affect both humans and animals. Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets may only experience a decreased appetite, fever, and vomiting. If your pet has consumed any of the affected products or is experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
People handling raw frozen foods can also become infected with Salmonella. People with infections may experience: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever; with more serious, but rare ailments including: arterial infections, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract symptoms. If consumers are exhibiting any of these symptoms after handling the affected product, contact your health provider immediately.??
The affected product should be returned to the retailer unopened for a complete refund or replacement. If the affected product has been opened, Nature's Variety advices to dispose of the product properly -- by following the "Safe Handling Guidelines" published on the package) -- and bring the receipt or the empty package (in a sealed bag) to a local retailer for full refund or replacement.
